Lady Vikes Shine at Mike Clock Tournament with Five Podium Finishes
The Big Bend Community College women's wrestling program kicked off their 2024-25 season with a challenging road matchup against Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, OR, on Saturday, November 16th. Facing the fourth-ranked team in the nation, the Lady Vikes knew they had their work cut out for them.
Despite a 30-9 team loss to Umpqua, BBCC showcased moments of individual brilliance. Abigail Varady delivered a standout performance, defeating the nation's #2-ranked wrestler at 145 pounds in a thrilling contest. Zoey Olson also contributed to the team's efforts with a strong win at 117 pounds.
While the overall result wasn't in their favor, the Lady Vikes demonstrated resilience and promise as they began their season against elite competition. With these bright spots, BBCC looks to build momentum as the season progresses. Head Coach Desiree Zavala had this to say regarding the first match.
"We need to continue to work on shot defense, but all in all it was a great first match of the season."
Following their season-opening dual against Umpqua, the Big Bend Community College women's wrestling team made waves on Sunday, November 17th, at the prestigious Mike Clock Tournament. Competing against top-tier talent, the Lady Vikes delivered a strong performance, placing five wrestlers on the podium.
Michelle Acevedo led the charge in the 131-pound division, earning a fifth-place finish after a series of hard-fought matches. Ihanna Perez also placed fifth in the 180-pound division, showcasing her determination on the mat. Elia Velazquez joined her in the same weight class, finishing just ahead in fourth place.
The team's standout performances included Natalie Marcyes-Weeks, who secured second place at 124 pounds after an impressive run through the bracket. Natalie Johnson capped off the day with a stellar showing in the 108-pound division, also earning a second-place finish.
With five podium finishes, the Lady Vikes demonstrated depth and talent across multiple weight classes, setting a strong tone for the rest of their season. Zavala had this to say regarding day two.
"Our team's performance exceeded my expectations. Our girls revived themselves on some tough losses from yesterday, and performed well."
