BBCC Men's Wrestling Makes Strong Debut in NJCAA, Prepares for Nationals

BBCC Men's Wrestling wrapped up their first season as part of the NJCAA, leaving a significant mark in multiple ways. Not only did they achieve individual success with seven wrestlers placing in their respective weight classes, but they also secured a commendable fourth-place finish in the conference standings.

BBCC had two wrestlers reach the finals, with Simon Cervantes (133 lbs) and Hunter Tibodeau (285 lbs) both finishing as runners-up. Additionally, Jaden Lopez (165 lbs), Dax Wood (174 lbs), and Drake Wood (184 lbs) each earned third-place finishes, while Alexander Barajas (149 lbs) and Mac Laird (197 lbs) rounded out the podium spots with fourth-place finishes.

With their success resonating throughout the NJCAA, BBCC also took home several conference honors. The team celebrated two Second Team All-Conference wrestlers, three Third Team All-Conference selections, and two Honorable Mentions.

Now, the Vikings set their sights on their biggest challenge yet—the NJCAA National Tournament, taking place March 7-8 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. BBCC will be represented by seven national qualifiers: Simon Cervantes (133 lbs), Alexander Barajas (149 lbs), Jaden Lopez (165 lbs), Dax Wood (174 lbs), Drake Wood (184 lbs), Mac Laird (197 lbs), and Hunter Tibodeau (285 lbs).

Head Coach Daviaire Dickerson emphasized the importance of mental preparation as the team gears up for nationals:

"The higher the competition, the more we focus on the basic details. Making sure we wrestle the whole seven-minute match is key. The main thing in these tournaments is that the athletes who succeed are the ones who can handle adversity. The day won't be perfect, and we don't have to wrestle perfectly, but we do need to keep the next position and situation at the forefront of our minds to stay present in the match and between matches."

With a strong debut season behind them, the Vikings are ready to make a statement on the national stage.
