BBCC Wrestling Makes Waves at NJCAA National Duals
After a five-week break from duals, the Big Bend Community College Vikings wrestling team hit the road for a lengthy trip to Miami, Oklahoma, to compete in the NJCAA National Duals. The Vikings showcased their potential, finishing the weekend with a 4-4 record and securing victories over two top-25 ranked teams, Carl Albert State College and Cloud County Community College.
Simon Cervantes and Hunter Tibodeau stole the spotlight, delivering undefeated performances throughout the weekend. Their dominance on the mat provided a much-needed spark for the team and highlighted the depth of talent within the program.
Reflecting on the weekend, Head Coach Daviaire Dickerson commended the team's aggressive approach but acknowledged areas for improvement:
"We wrestled aggressively and competed for the most part. As a team, we relied on scrambling too much, which put us in bad positions during matches."
While the victories over ranked opponents are encouraging, Dickerson emphasized that there's still work to be done as the team sets its sights on the national championships:
"We have a lot of work to still put in during these next two months before nationals. A lot of the focus will be on the basics—head and hand defense!"
With the NJCAA National Duals behind them, the Vikings now turn their focus to their next challenge. They travel to Atherton, California, on January 17th to face Menlo College as they continue their 2025 campaign.
The weekend in Oklahoma demonstrated BBCC's potential to compete at the highest level, but the road ahead will require continued dedication and refinement. Fans can expect the Vikings to build on their strong showing as they prepare for nationals.
