Lady Vikings Return to the Diamond After Three-Year Hiatus

Lady Vikings Return to the Diamond After Three-Year Hiatus

After a three-year absence from competition, Big Bend Community College softball made its long-awaited return to the field on February 21, opening the season with a challenging weekend slate against the Walla Walla Warriors and North Idaho Cardinals.

The Lady Vikings wasted no time making a statement in their season opener against Walla Walla, pushing across a run in the top of the first inning. However, early defensive struggles proved costly. The Warriors responded with four runs in the bottom of the first and continued to apply pressure, adding three runs in each of the second, third, and fourth innings. Despite flashes of offensive firepower, BBCC fell by a final score of 13–5.

Sophomore standout Peyton Trautman provided the highlight of the afternoon, launching a grand slam in the fourth inning. Trautman finished the game 1-for-3 with four RBIs, accounting for the majority of the Lady Vikings' offense and delivering a momentum-building swing for the program.

The following day brought another tough test as BBCC traveled to face North Idaho. Once again, the Lady Vikings showed early promise, plating two runs in the top of the first inning. But the Cardinals answered with three runs in the bottom half and then broke the game open in the second inning with a 12-run outburst. The explosive frame proved insurmountable, as BBCC dropped the contest 17–4. Trautman continued her strong weekend performance, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In the third and final game of the weekend, the Lady Vikings squared off with North Idaho once more in what proved to be their most competitive effort of the series. BBCC surrendered four runs in the opening inning but settled in defensively for much of the remainder of the game. Unfortunately, the early deficit loomed large, and the Cardinals secured a 7–2 victory.

While the results didn't fall in their favor, the weekend marked an important step forward for a program reestablishing itself after three years away from competition. The Lady Vikings showed resilience, offensive potential, and glimpses of growth that will serve as building blocks moving forward.

BBCC now turns its attention to a two-game set this Sunday against Clark Penguins, where the Lady Vikings will look to build on their experience and continue progressing as the season unfolds.
