Vikings Set For Conference Opener

Vikings Set For Conference Opener

The Big Bend Community College Vikings wrapped up their final preseason series this past weekend, hosting Centralia College in a four-game set that showcased both promise and areas still needing polish before conference play begins.

After a two-week layoff, BBCC came out looking a bit rusty—but still managed to take care of business in the opener. Sophomore right-hander Chase Fleming set the tone in Game One with an efficient, abbreviated outing as the Vikings prepared for conference play later in the week. Fleming was sharp, tossing four innings of one-run baseball while striking out four. He handed things off to Cole McKinnon, who matched the effort with three innings of one-run ball and two strikeouts. Nelson Ahumada and Ricardo Leon Guerrero closed things out to secure the victory. Offensively, BBCC found timely production. Ryley Doig and Tyler Langer each collected two hits, while Isaiah Aliksa delivered the decisive blow with two RBIs. The Vikings took Game One by a score of 4–2.

Game Two told a different story. Freshman left-hander Karter Wilson struggled early, surrendering three runs in the first inning before settling in. Relievers Dayton Shimatsu and Logan Grossnickle were unable to contain Centralia's offense, as BBCC fell behind 9–3 entering the seventh. The Vikings showed fight late, erupting for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to two. However, the comeback fell short in a 9–7 loss. Ricardo Leon Guerrero led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, including a solo home run. Isaiah Aliksa continued his hot stretch, launching his second home run of the season. Despite the offensive surge, pitching and defensive lapses proved costly.

Saturday's third game saw BBCC struggle to keep runs off the board, allowing Centralia to score in five consecutive innings en route to a 9–3 defeat. Starter Josh Stirm was a bright spot, striking out seven over three innings while allowing two earned runs. However, the bullpen was unable to hold the line. At the plate, Kaiden Weakley and Isaiah Aliksa paced the Vikings with three hits apiece.

In the final game of the series, freshman left-hander Juan Ayala delivered a solid start, going 4⅔ innings and allowing two earned runs. But once again, the bullpen struggled, surrendering six runs and sealing an 8–3 loss. Ryley Doig provided a highlight with a two-RBI triple, while Kevin Garcia, Ricardo Leon Guerrero, Nolan Webster, Kason Bleckert, Owen Mayencourt, and Jaime Ruelas all contributed hits.

With the preseason now complete, the Vikings head into conference play as they host Wenatchee Valley College this Wednesday at home, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
