Lady Vikes improve to 8-2 with win over Fairchild Falcons

Everyone got in on the action last night at the Peter C. DeVries Center on the Big Bend campus. Every player listed on the Lady Vikes roster notched a mark in the points column as BBCC bested the visiting Falcons from Fairchild Air Force Base, 106-23.

The Lady Vikes were led by Miranda Johnson (SO; Salt Lake City, UT) who scored 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field (3-of-5 from 3-point). Big Bend also got 15 points off the bench from freshman Abby Broadbent (PlainCity, UT) who also picked up 5 steals and a pair of assists. Hanna Wilson (FR; Rexburg, ID) and Leah Dougherty (SO; Rexburg, ID) rounded out those who finished in double figures scoring 10 and 11 points respectively.

Big Bend improved to 8-2 during the preseason with the win, and will now have a few days off to enjoy the holidays before returning to action Dec. 28-30 in Mount Vernon when they compete in the Skagit Valley Holiday Tournament. It's been a fast start for a team that graduated five sophomores last season - four of which started the majority of the season - and accounted for nearly 60 percent of the team's scoring. However, a solid freshman recruiting class has gelled well with returning starters Johnson and Dougherty and they are quickly becoming a team to be reckoned with.

"This year's team has come together as a unified group much earlier than I expected," said Head Coach Preston Wilks. "We lost great players and leaders from last year's team, but I've been happy with the leadership role that this year's sophomores have filled. The team held a retreat the second week of school in September and laid out expectations for team success and unity and the incoming players have totally bought in. What's great is not only do they respect each other, but I feel like they actually have a genuine love for each other."

After briefly celebrating the holidays, the Skagit tournament will provide the Lady Vikes one more tune-up before Northwest Athletic Conference East Region play begins Jan. 2. BBCC will face Skagit Valley (Friday, Dec. 28  at 5 p.m.), Olympic College (Saturday, Dec. 29 at 4 p.m.), and Bellevue (Sunday, Dec. 30 at 11 a.m.). Those games can be streamed live on the Skagit Valley Athletics Youtube page HERE.

"We've dropped a couple games in the pre-season, but each loss has been a chance for us to correct and improve aspects of our play," Wilks added. "We plan to use (the Skagit Valley Holiday Tournament) as a way to sharpen our focus on playing at a level we call 'East Region play'. That's where we need to be at come Jan. 2nd."
