Vikings Fall in Pair of One-Run Heartbreakers, Playoff Hopes Hanging by a Thread
Coming off a home series against Blue Mountain Community College, the Vikings traveled to Pendleton looking to keep their postseason push alive against Blue Mountain Timberwolves. Instead, they were dealt two crushing one-run losses that now leave little room for error heading into the final stretch of the season.
Game one delivered everything fans could ask for in a tight contest. Sophomore Owen Relkoff took the mound and gave the Vikings a strong outing, going 7 1/3 innings while allowing four runs—only three earned. Despite battling all game to stay within reach, the Vikings found themselves locked in a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation.
The game pushed into extra innings, where the Timberwolves capitalized on their opportunity, walking off the Vikings for a 5-4 victory.
Offensively, Alex Hirai led the charge with a three-hit performance, while Ricardo Leon Guerrero and Rylan Osbjornsen each added two hits in the tough loss.
Game two followed a frustratingly similar script. Once again, the Vikings found themselves on the wrong side of a 5-4 scoreline, with defensive miscues proving costly. Errors and missed opportunities ultimately swung the game in favor of the Timberwolves.
Isaiah Aliksa, Ryley Doig, and Rylan Osbjornsen each contributed multiple hits to pace the offense, while Cole McKinnon delivered a quality start on the mound. McKinnon worked six solid innings, surrendering just three runs, but it wasn't enough to overcome the late-game struggles.
With the sweep, the Vikings now turn their attention to a critical final stretch. They will hit the road Wednesday to face Columbia Basin College before returning home for Sophomore Day on Saturday—a game that could carry major implications for their postseason hopes.
